A Question

8/2/2022

I'd like to re-home four of my larger Kaye Wiggs dolls. They are all older, closed editions. I much prefer the newer, smaller versions, so these beauties have been lingering in the bottom of my display case for years now.

The thing is, it makes me very nervous to sell older, used dolls.  People are very picky about the condition of their dolls, and rightly so, but I don't want to end up at the losing end of a Paypal dispute. All four were originally purchased to be costume models, so have seen a lot of action. They all have body blushing, manicures and pedicures, but have developed shiny spots and a few scuffs over the years. My question is this; would buyers be interested in an older, used doll that has some wear, for a lower price (less than I paid for them brand new)? Or do I need to have them refreshed, and then put up for sale for a considerably higher price?

There's my Fair Human Layla, with faceup, body blushing, and manicure by Charie Wilson....

I'm just curious to know people's opinions, before I go to the added trouble and expense to have them all refreshed.

I wouldn't invest any money in enhancing the dolls. I would let that up to the new owners. They can create the looks they want for the dolls.

I think if you just state what you mentioned above, that the dolls were dress models but were handled with care that covers you. The dolls will be sold as is.

I have heard that KW is stepping down her doll productions. I would think that folks might be interested in your dolls for their collections.

Thanks for your opinion. I'd rather not spend money just so I can sell them. The scuffs are mostly from the doll stands and won't even show. The older dolls were also made from a very shiny resin (not matte like later dolls) which the matte sealer hid, but with wear some of the shine is starting to show through. They'd just need a new coat of matte sealer.

Yes, Kaye is going into 'semi-retirement'. She said that she's planning on just creating a few dolls in limited numbers and offering those herself. So no more big pre-orders.

Hi Martha,
I agree with Dorothy, I would not invest the time or money to do anything with the dolls as far as repainting, etc. If you are honest with the buyers I don't think you should have any problems.
I think all of the dolls are gorgeous. I really don't need to add to my KW collection right now, but Nelly is calling to me. LOL

I see these dolls sell on eBay all the time. No matter how used they always seem to go for big money, close to $1000 USD. If you’re very, very careful about the description, I’m sure you will be okay to sell them as is. Also, PayPal demands items be returned before refunding, so there’s no way you can get ripped off by selling through there and having someone open a case, keep the doll, and get a refund. PayPal’s policy is return for a refund. They are lovely dolls. I’m sure someone would really love them. Hope this helps give you some peace of mind.

Martha,
Your dolls are lovely with beautiful face ups. Everyone that knows your work will know that they have been well cared for. I agree with Dorothy that they would easily sell as is.

I agree that you should sell them as they are. If your description is accurate and you point out the things you've mentioned, people will know exactly what they are buying. Also, as Dorian said, people know you and know how ell you treat your dolls.

It also might be useful if you don't know a potential buyer, that you ask for references. That is a common practice on many doll boards.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I will try sell them as they are. However I'm rather busy so it will take me a little time to take all the photos and get everything ready.

And yes, references are a must.
