A New Wig for Talyssa

9/2/2020

I've been so frustrated by my Tiny Talyssa.  I've tried so many wigs on her yet none of them really look good on their own without a hat.  The problem is that she has such a high jellybean-shaped head and if there's bangs they stand out way too much. A hat helps hide everything...

But there are times when she really needs to go without a hat, so I tried another wig again this week, and it was better, but still not speaking to me...

She has such a small head that all the commercial wigs just don't look in scale. So I thought I'd try to make her a mohair wig. At least it would be the shape of her head, so would stay in place and not ride forward like all the Monique wigs do. The other night I made the cap....

I looked through my collection of brown mohair locks, and chose the 'Dark Antique Brown' from a goat named Lucille. She must have been a rather young goat since the mohair was very curly. So I sewed strips of wefting, combed it, and last night I glued it all on...

This morning I wet it, and combed it down, then styled it...

The wig will fluff out a bit when it dries, but I think I have finally found something that makes her look cute without a hat.

I love her new look! It's even really cute before you wet it. Sooooo much better than those other wigs. Still something to be said about home-made.

Thanks. Yes, sometimes handmade is best, especially for the really small dolls, or the ones with weird shaped heads. The scale of the mohair is a lot better. This wig also makes her look younger.

The wig is adorable! Just what she needed.

So much prettier than the commercial ones!

I have been struggling with tiny - 3"-5" - wigs for years. I love mohair, but find it impossible using wefts to get the right balance of coverage but not too much bulk for very small, babyish wigs. I finally starting experimenting with acrylic yarn, unravelled and sewn onto a stretch cap one loop at a time rather than made into wefts - not quite there yet, but much nearer to what I had in my mind's eye. If only it could be dyed as easily as mohair...

She looks adorable in this new wig. I like it poofy and I like it curly. The color suits her well.
