A New Shirt

Between taking new Christmas photos, I'm also working on making my three knights some new shirts. With Baron and Naomi back in Medieval times, their story will eventually continue, but Baron and the other two guys don't always need to be wearing their chainmail, so new shirts were in order.  I chose brocade fabrics in their three main colours; wine, black, and blue....

. I started with Baron's first. I wanted little ruffles at the wrist and neck, to reduce bulk by simulating him wearing a shirt underneath. I didn't want to use lace for the ruffles, so had to make lined strips out of my finest cream cotton, and then hand gathered and sewed the strips inside the ends of the sleeves....

I made an entirely separate cream collar to be sewn inside the wine red one....

The shirt is turning out rather well, but I still need to finish embroidering the front, hemming the bottom, and sewing on buttons. Then he can wear the shirt alone, or under his surcoat. Either way it's a more casual look for around the castle....

I also tidied up his hair recently.  After that trip up north in the RV, he had a serious case of 'bed head' from going in and out of the padded box many times each day.

The guys are going to look great in those shirts. I love how regal the fabrics are. (Actually the guys are all so handsome they would probably look great in paper bags, but these shirts are far more elegant and comfortable.)

I'm looking forward to seeing your Medieval families again.

I like the colors you have chosen. I am sure the men will look handsome in their new ensembles.

Did clothes makers in those times use patterns? Is that how clothes makers today know how to make these historic outfits? This is being asked by a non-sewer and non-crafter so sorry if this seems like a silly question but I am just curious.
