A New Camera

I got a new camera yesterday.  The one I've been using for years is 17 years old, which is practically 'prehistoric' in digital camera terms, and it's been giving me trouble for years now.  But I hate change, so have just dealt with all the increasing issues. But its days were numbered.

I had no idea what new camera to get, so my son did some research and said this model would be the best for my specific needs, and ordered it for me.

Now I get to try and figure out how to use it. Things have sure changed in 17 years, and there's LOTs of new stuff to get used to.  Nothing is the same.  And now I need a new PhotoShop, and a new cataloguing system as well, so there's even more new stuff to learn.

So even though it's exciting to finally get a new updated camera, I do feel sad about the passing of my old one. It's been my constant companion for 14 years, and has taken some amazing photos.

* Edited to add:   Turns out that I ended up returning this camera. The main reason was because the data card goes into the bottom slot with the battery, and the tripod shoe will cover the opening and prevent easy access. Since all my interior, and many of my backyard, photos, are all taken using a tripod, and I need to go check the photos constantly on my computer, the inaccessibility of the data card is a total deal breaker. So the hunt for a new camera continues.....

I like that you used the old camera to take a photo of the new one. It's like passing on the torch (or the flash, in this case) - chuckle.

The magic comes from YOU. I am sure that this new camera will work just fine and the photos it takes (you take) will be wonderful.

Thanks. I'm so glad that you said that it's not the camera that actually makes the photos. So many people think a good photo all depends on the camera one uses. It does help, to have good equipment, but that alone still won't guarantee a great photo.

Dorothy has said it so well, passing the torch from old to new, but the magic comes from you.

It won't be long before you're as comfortable with this camera as you are with your old one!

Change is hard, and letting go of my 'old friend' is hard too.

I'm really pleased that this new one has just nine focus spots, which light up with a red dot just like my old camera. It will also take compressed RAW images, so instead of them being 20 - 30 MG each, they will be half that. My old camera took small RAW, and I'm used to images being around 6 - 8 MG. The most challenging thing will be getting used to all the controls being on the touch screen. My old camera had manual switches and buttons, which I much prefer.

I'm waiting for Mikey to come and help me with all the settings, figuring everything out, and subscribing to the new Photoshop. Then I can really start to get used to the new camera. Until then I'm still using my old one.

I hate new cameras as well but alas I don't have a Mikey.

Well, it's been proving even more difficult that I feared, even with Mikey's help. My computer won't allow me to download the photos without jumping through all kinds of hoops. And cataloging them is also going to be a major problem. Nothing I have will work with it. Did I mention I hate change? Well, there's a reason.
