A Horse for Rex

6/9/2019

I'm home again, after another long weekend away.  Before we left it occurred to me that with Rex looking so realistic, he needed a different horse - a brown one. I didn't feel like painting one of my white ones, so took a look at the Our Generation stuff online  to see what was available. I knew there was a brown horse with bright orange hair, and if there was nothing else, I was prepared to get him and replace the mane and tail.

But I and they also had a great dark brown horse with black hair. Perfect!  I was hoping that one of the Mastermind Toy stores nearby would have one, but didn't have time to go check them out so let "the fingers do the walking" (remember that jingle?) and phoned them up instead. No luck!  So we looked up every Mastermind store in southern Ontario along the 401 corridor, since we'd be heading out that way Friday, and the Mastermind in Guelph had one!  So we reserved him, then stopped by to pick him up on our way to visit our daughter the next morning. Turns out all the Our Generation stuff comes with price tags already on it directly from head office, and the price tag was $10 lower than what the cash register scanned him in at, so they had to give him to us at the lower price. Plus all the OG stuff was on 20% off sale. So it was a great deal!

Here's the new brown horse - the Our generation 'Buckskin' Horse....

I'm going to touch him up and give him a bit of shading with some paint, so he doesn't look quite so 'plastic', and he's going to need a new bridle (turquoise plastic just won't do) and he needs some work on his saddle. The shape is fine, but part of the 'saddle blanket' is molded on and has been painted peach and pale turquoise. Which totally won't do.

So this coming week I have to address the horses for Rex and Bianca, touch them up, shade their saddles, make leather bridles, and saddlebags, and do the finishing touches on the last bits of costuming. There's four cloaks to stain, and a tricorn hat to make. So I'm going to be busy!

Dear Martha, wow, I feel like I should take a nap just reading all of the things that you are going to do (laugh).

I can't wait to see the horse transformation. I am sure that Rex will be proud.

Will the horse have a name? My first reference for horses and horse names is Roy Rogers. Was he on TV up there? His horse was Trigger. His wife, Dale Evans, had a horse named Buttermilk (I think).

...and that's just the doll stuff that needs doing!! There's tons of other things as well, including cooking and freezing meals for our upcoming trip, and getting ready for a big 'birthday/farewell' party Saturday for our granddaughter and family who are moving to Calgary soon.

I don't name the horses, but maybe I'll just call him 'Buckskin' since that is his company name. Helps differentiate him from the other horses.

Dear Martha, okay, now that you have added these additional things to the list, I am in the bed with the covers pulled over my head (laugh).

I'm so tired, but it's not going to do itself.

Can't wait to see the finished product! Had to laugh at the 'Buckskin'. Pretty sure buckskin is a color and that's not the color. Could just shorten it to Buck which would give Rex some macho cachet, like riding a horse named Thunder, Killer or Diablo.

I think you are right, but maybe the people at the company who come up with the names aren't experts on horses - or colours.

Good idea about the name! I hadn't really thought it out. Mostly because I hadn't even considered giving the horse a name. So, 'Buck' it is. I love those other names too, but think they'd suit a black horse better. Do they even make a black horse?

Wow...It's cute, but it's not a buckskin horse. Buckskins are gold or tan with a black mane and tail, and black stockings. This is a bay.

I can't wait to see what you do with the horse. I'm sure it's going to be great.

Like I said, who knows if the people at Our Generation even know anything about horses. I certainly don't know much. I'm guessing they wanted it to be a 'cowboy' horse, and just chose the name to suit. Not that it really matters to me. I just wanted a darker horse, and it was a choice between this one and the posable one with bright orange hair.

Getting a rex horse is the right idea; I agree that the rex needs a new one. And a brown one would, without a doubt, be perfect.
