Butterflies and Flowers

12/10/2015

A tray of tiny flowers and butterflies, made of Sculpey, for the final cake for the upcoming
string of December doll 'birthdays'. Thank goodness I'm almost done!
Picture
Everyone's birthday outfits are done too, so now I just have to come up with gifts for them all.
And then throw a big party - actually two - and take photos. Next week will be crazy busy!
Thankfully the fifth birthday isn't until after Christmas,
so I get a bit of a break to focus on the upcoming holidays and real family birthdays.

Dinner at the Vermillion Lakes

12/10/2015

We saw very little along the Icefields Parkway that day. It was misty and pouring rain, and most of the mountains were invisible in the low clouds and fog. We didn't stop at anything, not even Lake Louise. But by the time we reached the town of Banff, the rain had stopped, and we decided to get some fast food and enjoy it along the shore of the Vermillion Lakes.....

It was interesting that as soon as we were out of the mountains, the sky cleared and the sun came out, and it got really warm.    A few hours later, I caught the sun setting behind us....

the Icefields Centre

12/10/2015

One of my very favourite spots along the entire Icefileds Parkway is the Icefields Centre. We like to spend the night and wake in the morning to the amazing scenery all around us. However, a storm moved in overnight, and it was pouring rain, and the mountains were shrouded in mist. The Athabasca Glacier was barely visible. Even so, the Sno-coach tours were still heading out onto the glacier. I can't imagine taking an all-inclusive tour of the Rockies, and having today be the day you were scheduled to go out on the glacier.

Only Lonnie and Holly ventured out into the rain. They were so disappointed.

Over at the Visitor Centre, there were some nice life-size carvings of local animals...

It started to rain even harder, and it was time to move on....

Tangle Falls

12/10/2015

I love Tangle Falls. It's just north of the Icefields Centre, and the new 'Glacier Walk'.

The wind has really picked up, and it looks like we are in for some stormy weather....

Beauty Creek

12/10/2015

Heading south on the Icefields Parkway, we stop at the Beauty Creek overlook....

With just two weeks until Christmas, I'm trying to get through the last of our trip photos as quickly as I can, so that I'm not posting fall photos along with holiday photos, and that I'm not mixing autumn leaves photos through snow pictures - assuming it ever gets cold enough that we get any.

So that means there could be several trip posts per day.

the Photography Assistant

12/8/2015

When we were at Lake Cavell, I took several photos of Jan as he was my photography assistant.
First, one of the photos taken on the bridge at the south end of the lake....

Then Lonnie and Milo, on the bridge, watching the river flow off into the distance....

...and on the shore of the lake....

There was a small, soggy sheet of particleboard in the mud at the edge of the lake,
which I laid down on, so Jan had to do any fine-tuning of the doll's poses...

And a few more photos taken at Lake Cavell

Mount Edith Cavell

12/8/2015

I've already posted photos of our hike in the rain at Mount Edith Cavell on Remembrance Day,
but I just finished processing all the rest of the photos, so have a few more to share....

Medicine Lake

12/7/2015

Heading up Maligne Lake Road back towards Jasper, we stopped at Medicine Lake. The lake has a 'drain' where the water sinks underground, so the lake level varies at different times of the year. In late fall it's just a series of shallow streams....
Picture
A vast area at the north end of the lake had been burned by a forest fire that started on July 1st.

It was interesting to see new growth popping up mere months after the burn....

Maligne Lake

12/7/2015

One of the highlights in Jasper National Park, is a visit to Maligne Lake. The sun had disappeared and it was cold and dark, but we went to the 'Boat Launch' to get out and about....

The kids posed on the dock....

Coco wanted to go for a boat ride....

But Milo couldn't move the boat
