Same Bush, Different Doll

3/9/2011

I finished a commission of a Kaye Wiggs size version of my 'Carnelia' Forest Fairy outfit today. Thought I would brave the nasty weather and go out in the snow to take some "mood" shots. My backyard doesn't exactly have a wealth of interesting spots for winter weather photography, and I had to really watch my camera so the blowing snow wouldn't land on my lens, so I ended up taking photos of Miki wearing the commissioned outfit in the exact same spot as Asa yesterday. She's holding the same Rose of Sharon branch with the seed pod on top.

Now that the commission is done, I still have two more fairy outfits to photograph in the studio, and then I can start something new for Cuprit.

Photos and Other Loose Ends

I've finished a Mini Carnelia fairy commission, but don't have any pale pink feathers to finish the ensemble, so am spending the day tying up loose ends. I added two little bits of ribbon with a snap onto the back of the lavender fairy dress so it can be worn alone and the beads over the shoulders attach to something. Normally the ends of the beads snap onto the upper back of the wing corset, but without that corset underneath, the strings of beads need somewhere else to snap onto.

I'm also working on taking photos of the three fairy outfits which will be going up for sale as soon as I get their pages done; Lavender Fairy, Winter Fairy, and Mini Topaz.  I'm saving the 'Mini Azure' outfit for spring flower photography so I'll have some new photos for the article for BJDCollectasy. I took Asa in her 'Mini Topaz' outfit out in the backyard to take some snowy photos. Dolls should be photographed at eye level, but there's no way I'm getting down in the snow, so I put my Asa where I want her - on the ground near a bush - then use my tele-photo lens and stand well back and zoom in - which works great. As usual the photos of Asa turned out really well. She's just so incredibly photogenic! Doesn't pose very well, but looks amazing in photos.  I really like her!

More Proposals

I've been approached by an artist who is starting out with her own line of YoSD-size BJDs. She wants to commission me to make some small, elaborate OOAK outfits for her dolls for promotional purposes. That sounds like it could be interesting!

There's also a doll company in Asia wanting to give me one of their dolls to use as a costume model on my website. The big issue there is, the more different dolls I have , the less time I can spend costuming any one of them. So maybe the solution is to get a doll which is close in size to one I already have, so they can both wear the same clothes, and both be photographed in the same outfit?

Another Sunday, Another Snowfall

After two days of pouring rain, I woke to a winter wonderland - for the second Sunday in a row!  Well, I'd been wanting to photograph my Cuprit in her new Lavender Fairy outfit, so decided to give it a try out in the snow. Cuprit's lavender costume and long brown hair stand out beautifully against the snowy background.

Commissions and Other Developments

Well, no sooner did Miki arrive, but I received a commission to make a fairy outfit for another Kaye Wiggs doll the exact same size. Talk about perfect timing!

I've also been approached by a company in China which would like to mass-produce my doll costumes for me. I don't think I'll go for that - I'm not interested in becoming a big company having to put up big bucks and then try sell dozens and dozens of the same thing. My market is too specialized for that to be successful. Plus, I hate marketing!

An artist asked permission to do a painting of one of my dolls - Ryung in her Arwyn outfit. Of course I said 'yes'. I'm really curious to see how it turns out.

Miki Arrived Today!

My Kaye Wiggs Miki arrived today!  I totally missed her ordering period when I was away on a trip last fall, and have been enviously looking at everyone's photos of her. Fortunately, someone in the Netherlands wanted to sell their Miki so I was able to get her after-all.

Miki fits Asa's skirts and bodices, but not her sleeves since her arms are 'chunkier'. She's proportioned like a child with a larger head, so she fits my bigger girls' wigs. She's going to need some wigs and clothes of her own, but for now she'll be in borrowed stuff.
