Rex & Bianca's Newfoundland Adventure

These albums contain all the photos taken on our trip to Newfoundland, in the order they were taken, which is not in any chronological story order. At some point I will weave some of the photos together into a cohesive story....

St. Roche des Aulnais

It's a very long drive to the ferry to Newfoundland, so we make all sorts of stops along the way. Sometimes the dolls come out of the cupboard, and sometimes they don't.  Contemporary dolls would fit in anywhere, but Rex and Bianca could only work with either just scenery, or something manmade that dated from roughly two hundred years ago, or more.

So I thought the spires of the church at St. Roche des Aulnais, in Quebec along the St. Lawrence River would work....

Lunenburg

Next destination was the town of Lunnenburg.
Picture
It's a World Heritage site, and I was hoping there would be a schooner in the harbour. Lunnenburg is the home to the Bluenose II, which is the schooner on our dime, but I knew it was going to be away in Toronto for the upcoming Canada Day celebrations. I was hoping there might be another schooner in the harbour.....and there was....

So, out came Rex and Bianca, for some photos....
Picture
There were plenty of people around, but I just ignored them, and made sure none were in the background. The biggest issue to contend with was the wind...especially with Bianca's hair....
Picture
Picture
I had made their cloaks out of very thin fabric so they'd drape well, but they also caught the wind....

Even so, I managed some great shots....

Evening at Rose Blanche

The ferry takes seven hours to travel the 181 km to Newfoundland, so we arrived in the evening. The forecast was calling for a major storm for the next four days - lots of wind and rain, and very cold - but it was still clear that evening, so we headed down one of our favourite drives in Newfoundland, along the south coast to the fishing village of Rose Blanche and its stone lighthouse.

We packed up Rex and Bianca and their horses, into the big cloth bags I'd made to carry them, and headed out onto the trail over the rocks to the lighthouse.......hoping to take advantage of the sunset.

...and found a spot on the rocks overlooking the ocean....

I thought the lighthouse walls would make a good background...

Then the sun came out from behind the clouds, casting a golden glow over everything...

I decided to take some photos from behind, with them looking towards the sun....

Then a shot from the other side....

...and some more sunset shots...

Twillingate

Two days later we were in Twillingate, and Rex and Bianca were busy cleaning the day's catch on the dock....

One big fish, and a bunch of lobsters....should make for a great dinner.....

Fogo Island

Originally named Ile des Fougues by Portugese explorers in the 16th century, Fogo Island is Newfoundland's first Provincial Heritage District, with many historical sites. So, even though it was still raining, we went out to explore the island, and take pictures in the rain.  The canon at Fogo Head Battery served as the perfect setting for Rex....
Picture
There was also a canon aimed out to sea at Tilting....
Picture
I wasn't sure if Rex was on patrol, since he wasn't exactly wearing a military uniform, or if he was just standing there contemplating a voyage out to sea.  But that could be determined later..
Picture
In the town of Fogo itself, there was a lovely old 'cottage' surrounded by stone walls, which looked to me to be straight out of some BBC historical drama....a perfect setting for Bianca....
Picture
Picture
Without any kind of story in mind yet, I wasn't sure whose house it was.
Picture
Probably not her's.  Maybe an elderly aunt, or grandmother?

And was she coming or going?  Only time would tell....

Wedding Day

We had been exploring Fogo Island in the fog and rain that morning...
...when the sun came out just as I was taking a photo of the old Anglican Church....

Picture
Something suggested this would be the perfect place for a wedding. I hadn't really planned one, but I'd been thinking the past few days, that back in the 18th century it would have seemed improper for two young adults like Rex and Bianca to be travelling together without a chaperone.  Unless they were married.

So okay.....I went out looking for some tiny flowers for a bouquet, while they got dressed in their finest clothes.
Then after the ceremony, I took some photos....

They seemed very happy.   Now I had to come up with some ideas to fill in the blanks. Like, when did they decide to get married? Did he propose?  Where, and when? Did they go on a honeymoon? But I still had two weeks to figure it out. That's the advantage of shooting a story like a movie - totally out of sequence, to be pieced together later.
