the Kids Adventure in Newfoundland - Part 3

Puffins

On our way back to Cape Bonavista, we passed through Elliston, where there is a huge puffin colony just offshore. Even though it was a bright sunny day, there was a heavy fog along the coast. We made our way down the trail across the clifftops.....
Picture
..and even though there weren't many puffins, I did manage to photograph one.....
Picture
At Cape Bonavista there is another puffin colony just offshore behind the lighthouse, and even though the previous week there weren't any, this time there were hundreds....
Picture
Paige wanted to try take a photo of one...

Canada Day

July 1st found us at Cape Bonavista.  Seems every time we go to Newfoundland, we happen to be at Cape Bonavista on Canada Day. Which seems rather appropriate, with their red and white lighthouse to pose in front of.  But this morning it was very foggy and drizzling.......not the nicest day for a Canada Day celebration...
Picture
However, it stopped raining long enough for a group photo in front of the lighthouse....

"This rock I'm sitting on is wet!"

...and then it started to drizzle again....

What Iceberg?"

Usually when we go to Newfoundland towards the end of June, there's lots of icebergs up around St. Anthony, but this time there were none. They apparently came early, in May, and had mostly melted before we got there. However, we did ask in town if there were any icebergs in some of the other villages, and were told there was one in St. Carols. So we went to look.

We hiked up the trail over the cliffs with Cookie and Ringo...
Picture
"So, where's this iceberg they said was supposed to be here??"
Picture
"There's two little chunks of ice floating over there. That must have been it..."
Picture
"Well, that's rather disappointing!  I was hoping for something a little bigger!"

Inukshuk in Red Bay

We took the Ferry across to Labrador, and in Red Bay the kids posed with one of the Inukshuks near the Information Centre....
Picture
..with Cookie holding the Labrador flag we'd purchased in the ferry gift shop....
Picture
Then Cookie decided to take her Labrador flag and climb up on top....
Picture
Picture
"What are you doing up there??"
Picture
Picture
"Just sitting here enjoying the view. Come on up, and I'll even give you my flag!"
Picture
"This is really high!"
Picture
Olivia noticed that Ringo seemed a bit unsure...
Picture
"Be very careful up there!"

Flowers at Point Amour

We always like to visit the lighthouse at Point Amour. It sits along the Straight of Belle Isle, between Labrador and Newfoundland....
Picture
It's the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, and second tallest in the entire country.
Picture
The short Arctic-like tundra around it was dotted with wildflowers....
Picture
....and Cookie, who loves flowers, had to check them out....
Picture
"Look at these white ones!"
Picture
Picture
"Those white ones are very pretty!"

A Parade

Meanwhile Ringo was running around with the flag Cookie had given him...
Picture
Picture
"Hey, do you guys want to have a parade?"
Picture
Picture
"Sure!!"   ...and off they went....

Leaving Labrador

Back on the ferry, with a storm moving in.....
Picture
Back in Newfoundland David and Olivia watched as the ferry was unloaded.....
Picture

Port aux Choix

We headed south in the rain, to the lighthouse at Port aux Choix....
Picture
Picture
There were bunches of yellow lady slippers growing all over the barren landscape...
Picture
So, of course, Cookie had to go take a closer look....   "These are really cool!"
Picture
We tried to do some beach-combing for driftwood, but got caught in another downpour....
Picture

Moose

"Look at that sign!" said Ringo....
Picture
"Those people had an accident, and the moose has come to see if they are okay."
Picture
"No, silly!  That car is crumpled up because it hit that moose."
Picture
"They are as big as a horse, and are really dangerous, because if you hit one on the highway, your car gets destroyed, the moose gets killed, and there's a good chance you'll be dead too!"
Picture
"That's awful!! I hope we don't hit any moose!"
Picture
(*Note - these particular moose warning signs are unique to Gros More National Park)

Wild Horses

The kids were on the beach in Burgeo....
Picture
"Hey, look down there!!"
Picture
"There's horses on the beach down there!"
Picture
"I wonder if they are wild horses?"
Picture
Picture
"Looks like they are coming towards us!"
Picture
"I hope they don't bite!!"
Picture
Picture
The kids were watching as the horses came closer....
Picture
"Maybe they think we have something for them to eat."
Picture
" Anyone still have their apples from lunch?"
"I do!" said David and took out his apple....
Picture
Picture
"Me too!" said Ringo, who seemed surprisingly brave all of a sudden....
Picture
"I still have half my apple left..."
Picture
So they offered their apples to the horses...
Picture
Picture
...while Paige just watched, and took photos....
