the Kids Adventure in Newfoundland - Part 4

Leaving Newfoundland

It was finally time to leave Newfoundland. The ferry would sail at 11:45, and we had to be there two hours beforehand, so there was just enough time for a quick visit out to Cape Ray....

Then it was time to board the ferry. This time we were sailing on the 'Blue Puttees', which has much better outside passenger decks, so the kids came along....

"Good-bye Newfoundland!"
Picture

"I'm really going to miss it...."
Picture
Cookie felt bad for Ringo, and had an idea.....
Picture
She went down to the ferry Gift Shop, looking for something to cheer him up...
Picture
Then found Ringo sitting near the helicopter pad.....
Picture
"I got something for you..."
Picture
"I know how much you liked my Labrador flag..."
Picture
"...so I thought I'd get you one from Newfoundland too...."
Picture
"Then every time you look at it, you can remember all the fun we had!"
Picture
"Thanks!  That's really nice of you!"
Picture
Ringo loved the flag, and went to show it off to Olivia...

Picture
He was so happy now...

Back in North Sydney

It takes over seven hours to sail the 181 kilometres between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, and North Sydney Nova Scotia, so it was early evening as we approached port....
Picture
"Look, there goes another ferry...."
Picture
Picture
'..and there comes a cruise ship..."

Louisbourg

The next day we visited the Fortress of Louisbourg, and the kids had a picnic in the King's Garden....
Picture
...with some of their favourite take-out food....
Picture
Picture
Picture
"I wonder what it was like for people living here 200 years ago??"
Picture
"Well, they certainly wouldn't have been eating stuff like this!"
Picture

"Where did all the water go?"

After leaving Fortress Louisbourg, we wanted to visit Peggy's Cove again, but got side-tracked to Burntcoat Head, on the Bay of Fundy. There's a lovely little lighthouse, with a small park, and a trail down to the water.
Picture
The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world, averaging a change of 13 meters (43 feet) four times per day.  When we arrived the island just offshore was still surrounded by water....
Picture
Se we went back to the RV, and the kids got their boating gear ready. But by the time we came back, all the water was gone.
Picture
"Where did all the water go??"
Picture
Picture
Picture
"We took too long....."
Picture
Picture
"....and now the tide is out..."
Picture
I took a photo anyways.   "Everyone smile for the camera!"
Picture
"Well, let's go explore some, and I'll take photos....."
Picture
"...of the people walking on the ocean floor...."
Picture
"Look! We can walk around the island now!"
Picture
Picture
...and Jan went off to do just that....

Peggy's Cove

After spending so much of the day along the Bay of Fundy, we arrived at Peggy's Cove late in the day. But at least there weren't any tour buses this time, so it wasn't too crowded...
Picture
The kids posed on the rocks in front of the famous lighthouse....
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
"Hey, look at what Ringo has..."
Picture
He got himself a Nova Scotia flag from the gift shop....
Picture
"You're getting quite the collection!"
Picture
"Now I'd like to get a whole collection of Canadian flags, but I doubt I'll actually get to go to every province and territory."    He is probably right about that.
Picture
We went to explore the village a little....
Picture
Picture
It was getting late, so after a dinner of fish & chips from the restaurant, it was time to leave....
Picture

Grand Falls

The drive along the TransCanada Hwy up through New Brunswick is long and boring at the best of times, but it was also very warm, and wet. We decided to take a little break at Grand Falls Windsor.  Cookie went to the lookout...
Picture
"There's not much water going over the falls today. They must be diverting it all through the power plant...."
Picture
Ringo had noticed all the Canadian flags on the front of the Visitor Center; a Canadian flag, plus one from each of the 10 provinces and three territories, and to make them feel welcome, an American flag too.
Picture
And who should be coming out of the Visitor Center just then.....
Picture
"Look, I got a New Brunswick flag from the Gift Shop for you!"
Picture
"Wow! This is the most colourful one so far!  Thanks so much!"
Picture
And I took a photo of the two of them together....
Picture
Then the two of them went to look at the gorge, and the water swirling down below.......
Picture
Picture
"Not much water coming over the falls today, is there?"
Picture
And that was the last time the kids came out on our way home.....
