New Beginnings, Chapter 12
The continuing story of Baron and Naomi
the Doctor
Winter had melted into Spring, and Rex had been sent up north to fetch the Doctor.
The King wanted to thank the Doctor personally for saving his best friend Baron's life.
So he sent Rex up to escort him.
But Lawrence had waited until spring to honour the Doctor, as he intended for the Doctor to be close by when it came time for Naomi to deliver.
Baron and Naomi had been through enough the past few months, and Lawrence knew only too well that childbirth was one of the most dangerous times in a woman's life. His own mother had died giving birth. So wanted to make sure there would be expert help at hand should it be needed.
The two men made their way through the meadows as the sweet smell of spring flowers filled the air.
"It won't be much further now."
"We are almost there."
Reunion
Lawrence had confided his plans to Miho, and she was prepared to host the Doctor during his stay. So Rex escorted him to Miho's castle, where everyone gathered to welcome him.
"It's wonderful to see you again!"
"It's wonderful to see you again!"
"You're certainly looking good, son."
"It's all thanks to you sir."
"I don't think I'd be here today if it wasn't for you."
"I'd like to introduce you..."
"...to my lovely wife, Naomi."
"It's an honour to meet you Sir."
"My Lady..."
"Now I see why Baron was so eager to go home."
"I would too, if I had such a beautiful wife."
Naomi embraced the Doctor.
"I can't even begin to tell you how grateful I am for everything you did for Baron. You saved his life, You saved my husband's life, and ensured that our child will grow up knowing his father. And for that I am truly thankful."
Miho and Dominic
"I'd also like to introduce you...."
"... to my parents."
"My mother Miho..."
"...and my father Dominic."
"It's an honour to meet the two of you."
"The honour is all ours Sir."
"It's wonderful to finally meet you.
"We owe you our son's life."
"And I hope you will enjoy your stay here with us."
"Thank you Ma'am."
"I'm sure I will."
Surprising News
The King had made him aware that Baron's wife was with child and due to deliver at any time, so that evening after dinner, the Doctor asked Naomi how she felt about letting him examine her, in private in her and Baron's apartment.
"How have you been feeling, my Lady?"
"How have you been feeling, my Lady?"
"I've been feeling quite well, although the baby has been moving an awful lot..."
"So I'm not getting much sleep, and I'm feeling very tired."
Naomi sat down so the doctor could examine her. She had been rather surprised when he had pulled out a stethoscope. But she couldn't let on that she knew what it was.
"That's an interesting contraption you have there. Do all you doctors have one?"
"No, they don't My Lady. I was given this one by a mysterious traveller once, many years ago. He claimed that he was from the future, and said it was called a stethoscope, and that it's used to listen to a patient's heart. Of course I didn't believe that he came from the future, but I have found it to be incredibly useful."
"So, let's take a listen to your baby's heart."
"Hmmmm.... You say the baby has been kicking a lot?"
Baron watched as the Doctor moved his stethoscope over Naomi's belly...
Naomi became concerned, "Is everything okay Doctor?"
"Yes it is. And now I know why you've been experiencing so much kicking."
"I'm detecting two heart beats. You are carrying twins."
Naomi wasn't all that surprised. "That's wonderful news."
On some level she had already suspected it. But without the benefit of modern medicine she couldn't be sure.
"Do you think you could stay at the castle here with us until my time comes, and help deliver the babies? I'd feel more comfortable with a skilled doctor nearby."

"Yes, of course, My Lady. I'd be more than happy to."
"The babies have dropped and are in position, so they can come anytime now."
Labour
Later that same night, Naomi's contractions began, and Miho sent for Bianca, who was an experienced midwife.
"You can do this."
"The doctor and I will help you through this."
Baron had been told that he needed to stay out of the way. Childbirth was no place for a man.
But he wanted to stay with Naomi...
She called out for him. "Baron....I need you.."
"I need Baron to stay. I want him to stay. These are his babies too."
So he rushed to her side, and took her hand...
...as the doctor listened to the babies' heartbeats again.
"Everything is looking good. And you are doing great."
"With the next big contraction I need you to push."
Birth of the Twins
A few minutes later, the first baby emerged....
"It's a boy!'
Baron and Naomi's hearts were filled with love as they watched the doctor check him out, and the maid clean him off...
Then after the second baby arrived, the maid passed Naomi and Baron their son....
"He's so beautiful!!"
"And this one is a girl."
Miho drew near Naomi and Baron as they cradled her two little grand babies, "They are so beautiful."
Afterwards
It had been a long night, and Naomi's twins had been safely delivered....
The doctor was tired, and relieved that everything had gone well, and that there had not been any complications.
Baron came over to thank him...
While Bianca and the maid did some final clean up.
"We were certainly lucky that you arrived yesterday,"
"Just in time to assist at the birth. You saved the day once again."
Miho turned to the Doctor, "It's been a very long night, and I think Baron and Naomi could use some rest....and some privacy.
So if you aren't too tired yourself, maybe you would like to join Dominic and I downstairs for some breakfast?"

"Thank you Ma'am. I'd like that."
After everyone left, Baron joined Naomi and the babies...
Their hearts were filled with love as they lay watching their babies, but eventually Baron moved them into their cradle......in the hope that they could all get some much needed sleep.
Together they lay watching their two little miracles, until eventually exhaustion overcame them and they finally drifted off to sleep.
