the Kid's Adventure in Newfoundland
We went on a road trip to Newfoundland in the end of June and early July, and took along two sets of dolls - a historical pair, and a group of five contemporary children. They included Paige, David, Ringo, Cookie, and Olivia....
the Ferry
Lined up, waiting to board the ferry to Newfoundland...
Ringo was concerned...."Are you sure all these cars and trucks will fit into that ferry?"
"There sure are an awful lot of them!"
"Better get inside, since our line is starting to move"
Following the RV in front of us, in we go.....
We brought a few kids with us on the ferry, and went up un deck....
"Look at all those birds over there!"
"Look at all those birds over there!"
Down below them, the huge concrete pylon was covered with nesting cormorants....
.....and many nests were full of babies...
"Let's go look around some more..."
Checking out a lifeboat.... "Do you think there's enough room for everyone on board?"
Before we sailed, I decided it wasn't worth keeping the dolls with us for seven whole hours. We were on the ferry Atlantic Vision (least favourite of the Maritime Atlantic ferries) and it didn't have any good outdoor seating at all, so there wouldn't be the opportunities for photos like I had hoped. Once the ferry set sail, passengers would no longer be able to access the vehicle decks, so Jan quickly took the dolls back down to the RV.
Twillingate
The next day a big storm moved in, and we ended up changing our travel plans, and headed east. We arrived in the town of Twillingate, wiped off one of the soaked 'docks' so the kids could finally get out and have a look around....
"Look at all the boats in the harbour!"
"But there's no icebergs..."
But that didn't deter Paige from taking some photos....
We headed over to the Twillingate lighthouse, high on a cliff overlooking the ocean, at Long Point....
David and Olivia got out to look around, but the fog was too dense to see much of anything...
"There's no icebergs here either..." "How can you tell? I can't see anything"
"Well, if there were any, they'd be out there..."
Back in town, David and Ringo visited the Iceberg Shop....
Their tour boat was moored along their dock. Business had been really poor this year. Hardly any icebergs had shown up.
With the sun finally out, and the weather forecast looking hopeful, we decided to take the ferry to Fogo Island. We missed the ferry by just fifteen minutes, so were first in line for when it came back three hours later. Which meant we were first onto the ferry....
Of course, no sooner had we booked a ticket, but it started to rain again.
On Fogo Island, Olivia and Ciikie watched as the ferry was reloaded for it's trip back to the main island....

Trinity
The next day we were back on the main island, and drove to Trinity. It's a beautiful old English town, dating back to the 16th century. It has many old buildings registered as Newfoundland Heritage Structures, and it's like a visit back in time...
There was a small 'stage' out by the water near the Ryan premises, on which some of the kids had gathered with their ice creams...
Ringo wondered what it would have been like here, two hundred years ago, back in the days of merchant ships and pirates...
So we explored the town some more....
We stopped high on the hill overlooking town, and Cookie took her ice cream and sat down...
"This town is like a Pioneer Village, that people still live in.."
"Yes, and if you look way out there, where the lighthouse is..."
"...there used to be a fort, to protect them from the French."
Cape Bonavista
We arrived at Cape Bonavista around dinner time, and the kids chose to eat their's at the picnic table overlooking the famous lighthouse.....
"That pizza looks really good..."
"I'll take slice of the pepperoni, please.."
While having dessert, Cookie noticed something.....
"What's that over there?"
Ringo and Olivia went to look....
"It's an inukshuk"
"There's several of them over there on the rocks..."
So they went on over for a closer look...
"This one is bigger than me!"
"I wonder who made them?"
