Another Balloon Adventure

Photos of the dragon family when they invited the Avery twins along on another balloon adventure to Newfoundland

Meeting Friends

It was mid June, and we were headed east to catch a ferry to Newfoundland. Since we had to pass through Montreal to get to the Maritimes, we had arranged to meet up with some friends. It was a lovely day so we got together in the park outside their building. It was the very first time any of them had met in person, so everyone insisted on a group photo.

There was Jude and Grace with their children Bonnie and Jamie, and the entire dragon family,
together with, from the left: Poppy, Ben, Willow, Holly (aka Buttercup), Ginger, and their puppy Biscuit.
Picture
Their new friends had seen plenty of photos of the dragons before, but had never met one in person. Poppy was drawn to Nuri right away...
Picture
But Ben was a little apprehensive...
Picture
Avery and Emily loved their friend's puppy, Biscuit....and asked if they could pet him....
Picture
Bonnie was still holding the map, after we'd gotten lost. Driving in Quebec can be a huge challenge thanks to all the really long place and road names, which are all in French, so by the time we've figured out what the signs say, we've already passed the exit. And we were a little confused as to which highway - 20 or 40 - was the Trans Canada Hwy (we took the wrong one).
But we did eventually make it.

Little Emily came out to join them...
Picture
but Grace and Jude had gone into the RV to make lunch for everyone.
Picture
Little Emily wanted to know how it was possible for Avery and his sister Emily to go with the dragons on a flying adventure, so Winston brought the hot air balloon to show them, just as another new girl, Candy, arrived. Then Holly and Emily climbed into the basket with Nuri to check it out....
Picture
Meanwhile Ben and Scorch were becoming better acquainted.
Picture
And of course, they all wanted another group photo taken.
Picture
Everyone had a great time with their new friends, and they all agreed that they'd like to visit each other again some time.

Burntcoat Head

After leaving their friends, the dragons continued on to the Maritimes with Avery and Emily in the hot air balloon. They decided to take a little break at Burntcoat Head on the Bay of Fundy.
Picture
The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world, with the water levels rising and dropping over 18 metres every six hours. When the dragons arrived, the tide was out, exposing the ocean floor all the way to the island...
Picture
'Wow, that's some tide!" exclaimed Saphira.
Picture
Picture
There were people walking out on the ocean floor....
Picture
...and they had to be careful not to step on the barnacles, snails, and other sea life in the tide pools.
Picture
Picture
But it would be a long walk for the children, and she didn't want them stuck out there when the tide came back in, so Saphira insisted they all stay near the shore...
Picture
Picture
...and watch the tide come back in from a safe distance.

the Tablelands

The dragons didn't need to take the ferry to Newfoundland because they could just fly there...
Picture
They arrived on the west coast over the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park...

Humber Arm

The dragons decided to stop for the night at Blow Me Down Provincial Park along Humber Arm...

Breakfast

Before continuing their journey, they needed to start every day off with a good breakfast...
Picture
There were so many delicious things to choose from....
Picture
Picture
Scorch got out the bowls....
Picture
...as the others decided which cereal they wanted....
Picture
Picture

the Iceberg

After breakfast they all flew to the beach at Bayview, near Twillingate, where there was an iceberg grounded close to shore....
Picture
The night before, the iceberg had been positioned like this....
Picture
...but some time in the night it had turned, and a big piece had broken off...
Picture
Winston was amazed...
Picture
They posed for some photos with it...
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
...then turned to watch and see if anything else would happen....
Picture

Fried Chicken

The dragons and the twins arrived at Cape Bonavista and set up camp high on the rocks overlooking the ocean.
Picture
No one felt like making dinner, so they picked up some fried chicken takeout at KFC and Mary Brown's.
Picture
That way everyone could enjoy their favourite...

Looking for Whales

After dinner everyone had the opportunity to just relax and enjoy the scenery...
Picture
"This place is so beautiful."
Picture
Picture
Nuri came and sat beside her parents...
Picture
..while her sister and brothers climbed up on a rock in hopes of seeing some whales off in the distance...
Picture
..but they didn't see any.
Picture

Puffins

It was a cold blustery morning when Winston took the kids out for a hike...
Picture
..and they spotted some puffins...
Picture
Picture
Well, never missing the opportunity to make some new friends, everyone went to say 'hello'...
Picture
Picture
They learned that their new friends spend the entire year out on the open ocean...
Picture
..and they only come ashore to lay eggs and raise their young.
Picture
Picture
So, everyone felt lucky to have met each other.
