Meanwhile Santa was busy making his rounds….
and enjoying some treats of his own. Many homes had put out cookies and milk for him He usually just took a few cookies and stuffed them in his pockets to enjoy later, because the last thing he needed was a sugar high, especially tonight,
but occasionally when someone had put out something special, he’d take a short break and sit down to actually enjoy one or two.
And then off he'd go again....
He’d be as quiet as he could be, but sometimes he’d get caught by a child who had stayed awake all night waiting to see if there really was a Santa Claus.
Then he’d stop and chat for a few minutes
before tucking the child in and continuing on his way.

As a result, it was a very long night, and it was starting to get light already, when there was just one more house on his list. Once he’d dropped off the gifts, he’d be done for another year …
