Fourteen Years!

11/1/2024

On November 1st fourteen years ago my website went public.  It's been quite the journey. When I look back at everything I've done over the years I just feel tired. I guess that's what happens when one gets old. Everything is so much harder now.

I've been posting almost daily for many years now, and I think it's finally time to start slowing down a bit. It's time to maybe address the things that I've wanted to for years, but never had the time for because I'm always stressing over what new photos and stories to come up with in order to keep the invisible masses entertained on a daily basis.

So, what does that mean? And what lies ahead?  I don't know, and right now I don't have any long term plans or goals. I just spent the last two months making prototype costumes for Ruby Red Fashion Friends. Sewing doesn't go as fast as it used to, and I've finally completed the designs that I wanted to. But of course I can't say what they are, or share photos of any of them. In fact it's all rather stressful having to keep everything a total secret.

I still have hundreds of photos from our trip out west earlier this year to process for a book I'd like to put together at some point. In fact there's lots of books I'd like to have made of many of my doll stories from over the years. Gathering existing photos is infinitely easier than taking them! In fact there's two rough first drafts that have been waiting for some time already for me to finally address. But I can't do everything at once, and time keeps marching on.

So, I'll see where the coming year takes me. Right now I'm finishing taking photos of my RRFF prototypes, and there's a short story I was inspired to photograph which I've been working on the past two weeks. We've been down to the beach five times already to take different scenes for the story, and there's still one more to do there, and it will be the most elaborate, complex one of all. It's just these photo shoots are very 'weather-dependent' and need to be taken either first thing in the morning on a semi-cloudy day, or late afternoon, also in semi-cloud or hazy sunshine - and with little or no wind. Then there's one final scene in my dining room. After that I'd like to just get back to taking photos of whatever inspires me, taking nice photos of my dolls just for the sake of it.

I still have lots of ideas, and things I would like to make, but it just keeps getting harder, and harder. So I guess the best I can hope for is a reasonably good year ahead. Or at least one where things don't get any worse.

Anyways, enough of that. Time to go finish setting up the last RRFF scene on my dining room table......

Dear Martha, Happy 14th Anniversary. Thank you for your beautiful photo stories. I think you have a full right to slow down, you brought so many ideas, costumes, really complex photostories that it must have taken a lot of your energy over the last 14 years. It's fully understandable that it's impossible to go on at the full speed like perpetuum mobile and produce new and new photostories, considering that you are mainly one man show (or two men show, we cannot forget Jan's great contribution). We will be glad for anything you post and it does not have to be on a tight schedule.

I think the main point is that you find happiness in taking the photos and sewing new costumes or even taking pictures of your old costumes. The most important is that you do not feel the regular posting as stressful, but it will still bring you joy and therefore it will bring the joy to us. Take care.

Thank you for understanding, and taking the time to respond. I really do appreciate it.

Dear Martha, Happy Anniversary! I am so happy that I got to know you and am able to read your wonderful stories.

I echo Jitka, we will enjoy whatever you post when you post it.

It does seem that you have a ton of things on your "to-do" list.

I can't wait to hear more about the new short story you are creating. You mention that it is very elaborate. I thought the wedding story was elaborate so I am really looking forward to this one.

Thanks! I still have a lot of photos waiting to be posted, so that should give me some 'free' time to pursue other, new stuff.

The story I'm working on isn't really all that 'elaborate'. Well, other than the fact that it spans several centuries. It's the last scene I need to shoot at the lake that will be. It's always a challenge to do anything with a lot of dolls out on location. It's not so bad when we are out on a trip with out RV, and I set up a complex scene on a nearby picnic table. But at the beach we have to carry everything from the parking lot out along the pathway to the beach, and all in one trip.

Dear Martha, Happy Anniversary!!! Like so many people, your blog and photostories and costumes and tutorials have brought me so much joy over the years! I'm sorry I haven't commented very often, I enjoy each and every one, and I've loved trying out the patterns you've posted too - they're all amazing!!! It must take so much energy and effort to do everything that you do, I think if it's becoming a stress instead of a joy then of course you should slow down and just do whatever you feel like you want to! I hope you can enjoy a more relaxed pace and just catch up on what you want to do - and celebrate the anniversary of all the amazing things you have achieved!!!

Happy 14th birthday to your blog Martha!
It's true that I haven't been following it for very long, just two years, but I'm a huge admirer of your work, whether it's the photos, the imagination it takes to invent and tell your stories, but above all the extraordinary way in which you take your photos, in places that are necessarily human-sized, giving the illusion, thanks to the art of perspective, that everything is at the right scale in relation to your characters and dolls.
I've had my own blog for 17 years, but all I do is show the outfits I used to make and still make for my dolls. I've only made one set, to the scale of Tonner mannequin dolls (16"), which I've called the “fitting room”.
So good luck in continuing, because even though I don't often comment, I visit your blog every day.

Happy 14th - I look forward to seeing your blog every day and it brings a smile to my face every morning. You are truly amazing. You need to do whatever makes you happy and less stressful. I totally understand that time makes doing things take longer from personal experience. I look forward to whatever you have in store,

Dorian

Dear doll design maker.
Your work is full of passion, wonderful ideas, and loveliness.
It inspired so many people.
I am working harder looking at you. Your work is very difficult and requires a lot of time. I think those efforts raise the value of the work

happy anniversary! And thank you for all you've shared along those years. Seeing your beautiful creations is a constant inspiration, and always encourages me to try and make things of my own.
Even if you decide to post less often, every new post will still be enjoyed and treasured.
