A Wig for Baron

10/25/2019

I don't like making wigs, especially not for guys.  Somehow there's a much higher expectation. I know what I'd like it to look like, but don't really know exactly how to do it.  So I end up just forcing myself to start, and hope the wig turns out okay.

I went through my stash of mohair, and chose a Brown/Black from a goat named 'Delilah". It had quite a curl, but was the darkest mohair I had.  So I sewed mohair strips, and very slowly hot glued them to the hard cap.  Baron looked like a 'dandelion gone to seed' ....
Picture
Next step was to soak the wig, apply shampoo and rinse, then after covering his head with plastic wrap, comb and trim the wig as best I can, not removing too much, since you can't exactly put it back on.  Then I worked in some hair gel, and wrapped his head with a cotton strip and let it dry.
("Help! I can't breathe!!")
Picture
Then today I removed the wrap, and plastic, and did some more trimming.  I worked in some more hair gel, wrapped his head back up again, to let it dry again.  This time his wig was finally starting to look more like I had wanted.  Not bad....
Picture
I left the back long because he will most likely end up in some kind of period or fantasy outfit. Then for everyone who was asking to see him with Rex, I photographed the two of them together....
Picture
I'd say they don't look that much alike after all, although they can definitely be brothers.

A Name Change

10/22/2019

It was three years ago today that JID "I" arrived back home after getting her faceup.  I generally tend to keep sculpt names, but "I" just wasn't going to do it, so I tried to come up with 'I' names, and I liked 'Iris' and 'Isis'.....but couldn't choose at first.....
Picture
Almost immediately, she became a Fantasy character, modelling the Dark Fairy costumes I had just made....
Picture
...and 'Iris' just seemed too demure for a dragon-winged fairy.....
Picture
Picture
...so she became 'Isis'......
Picture
But things have changed a lot since those early days. Two years ago she became a contemporary girl, met Steve, and they created a blended family together.
Picture
Then a year or so ago their whole family was transported back to Victorian times, where she's been ever since. So now I'm thinking 'Iris' seems more fitting a name for a lovely Victorian lady.
Picture
So, from now on, her name will be Iris.....
Picture
...at least I'm going to try it out, and see if it sticks......

Behind the Scenes

10/21/2019

When I did the Fairy banquet series a few weeks ago, I took photos as I set up.  I didn't want to do the same old patio table setting, so Jan moved the table onto the grass. But it had been recently reseeded, so as not to trample it, he put down a couple of sheets of plywood. The upside down pots were to support the flower baskets (if needed) and the benches were for trays of dolls. The pail under the table was full of small leaves to spread around after setting up....
Picture
First in place was the pillar with railing. Then the three baskets with 'million bells' were arranged behind and to the sides.  I had purchased the three hanging baskets  with the tiny pink, purple, and yellow flowers, back in the spring, specially for use in doll photos. They are what tie the doll set up itself to the flowers in the background in my photos.....
Picture
Then it was time to set up the table and chairs, and start adding all the dolls.  Jan took a photo from his office up on the second floor, of me setting up. It also gives a bird's eye view of our backyard, which is tucked into the side of a hill, with a house towering above in behind.....

The final setup.....all ready to start taking photos......

Introducing Baron

10/21/2019

My new FID Baron arrived today!  On first glance he reminds me of a cross between Rex and Tedros, but with facial hair - which of course explains why I liked him in the first place.
Picture
I had planned on making him a wig and outfit this month, but have been unable to sew due to a sore wrist, so I had little choice but to put him into something I had on hand.  Not that there's much choice. He didn't look like a tuxedo kind of guy, so I put him in Rex's Phantom ensemble.
Picture
I borrowed Rex's wig.  It's clear that he needs the same colour wig, so I better hurry up and make him one. Like tomorrow! I can't have either one of my guys standing around bald!
Picture
He will probably end up being Rex's brother, and even though he does resemble him a lot from the front, Baron does look very different from the other angles.......
Picture
Picture
So now he needs an outfit.  I had been thinking of something inspired by Tudor and Elizabethan, but not necessarily historically accurate. More like a 'Fantasy' version.

Party Girls

10/20/2019

Back when I made the birthday dresses for Cookie and Olivia, I also made some dresses for my two Kaye Wiggs Minis. After all, the lace I used, makes two dresses, and it's just a little more work to make two instead of just one.  And then I'd be all set for next year when they celebrate their arrival dates. So, I wanted to take some photos of them in their dresses, and what better place to do that, than in the newly finished toy section of the Victorian Nursery.....
Picture
And because I made THREE dresses, Missy got to model that one too....
Picture
Posing with the 'new' vintage metal baby buggy I found at Value Village two weeks ago....

I like how the room works as a background setting, and think the Victorian children will enjoy playing in this side of the nursery, as long as the new baby isn't taking a nap.

The Victorian Nursery is finally finished.  Now it just needs an occupant....
