View down to the harbour in Peggy's Cove.... Piles of lobster traps on the wharf.... Looks like a good place for another photo shoot....
On the morning we visited Peggy's Cove, the scenic little fishing village along the Atlantic coast, about an hour south of Halifax. The place was quietly shrouded in fog, still way too early for the inevitable busloads of tourists that would soon arrive.... I took these photos on the rocks at the end of a small parking spot overlooking the harbour
It was a lovely sunny day, and Winston though it was the perfect day to try get a bit of a tan. He grabbed the lotion. It was 65+ UV protect, so he figured it should be good enough.... He tried to find a comfortable spot on the rocks... After a little while, Holly, who was missing her friend, went to look for him.... "Winston, where are you?" "Oh, there you are!" Winston got up.
The rocks were just too uncomfortable to lay on. Plus, he didn't want to get burned. So he and Holly just sat and watched the icebergs drift by.... On our trip, when Leona was wearing Isar's archer costume, it was so windy and the cloak wasn't hanging properly in a way that would have kept her warm. So I cut a hole to let the strap from her quiver pass through, and so the cloak would hang better. Now, back at home I've given Isar her costume back, but I wasn't going to put the cloak back on with that unfinished hole. So I'm binding it. It's the first constructive thing I've done all week. The latest X-rays show the pneumonia is gone from my lung, and the blood tests came back clear as well. But the doctor says it will still take a couple of weeks to fully recover. I can't say that I really feel much better than when we were still on our trip, but I think that starting to want to do things is probably a good sign.
It was late in the evening as we took a little walk along the waterfront in Lunenburg *I've started the first of the Newfoundland Trip albums in Favourite Photos 2016. Each day, as I add posts here in my Blog, I will also add the photos to the album. That way they can be viewed in chronological order in their entirety there.
The next day, after driving through all of New Brunswick into Nova Scotia, we decided to make our usual detour towards Halifax, to visit Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg along the Atlantic coast. They are a couple of hours off the TransCanada Hwy, but are our favourite places in all of Nova Scotia, so when we are this close, we just have to go visit. We arrived in Lunenburg late in the day, and everyone was ready for some snacks, and a rest... Historic Lunenburg waterfront Milo was glued to his laptop, but the puppies wanted to play. Woof, woof, bark, woof....woof (translation: Close that thing and come play with us. We are supposed to be on vacation!" Group shot of the kids and the puppies
It was very warm, but we had a little look around in Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies. With it being a cloudless, sunny day, I only took two dolls out - Coco and Holly. Gorgeous old stone house.... Every town has a big church in the middle..... View along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.....
It's a long drive to North Sydney, in Nova Scotia, to catch the ferry to Newfoundland. After almost 450 kms through Ontario, come over 600 kms through Quebec, then around 500 kms through New Brunswick, and another 400 or so through Nova Scotia. We like to take a break from the highway driving now and then, and in Quebec we usually take the coastal drive along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, through the quaint old towns east of Quebec City.
One of our favourites is Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies. There's a small park out on a promontory out in the river, with views back to town... It may be ten days late, but here's my family group posing for a group photo
at Cape Bonavista on Canada Day. One of the main reasons we went to Newfoundland, was to watch for icebergs. We were not disappointed. When we arrived in St. Anthony at the top of the northern peninsula, there were lots - three massive ones off off the lighthouse, 15 more in the water all around, 2 huge ones at Goose Cove, and three giant flat ones at St. Anthony Bight. The one at the base of Fishing Point, at the lighthouse, was especially beautiful. I love this photo of Jan down on the rocks, silhouetted by the bergie bits......It gives a sense of scale to just how big the iceberg was..... Of course that meant trying to take some doll photos, but with the bright blue skies, I had to work quickly, and usually only with two dolls at a time, in order to limit the doll's exposure to the sun. Like here with Holly and Coco and their puppies We spent the night up by St. Anthony, at Goose Cove, where there's a public park at the end of the road, with a trail overlooking the ocean. This was the view out our RV window one evening..... I'd brought along everyone's Fantasy outfits - and Winston - in hopes there might be some interesting Fantasy-like landscapes. But it took 2 1/2 hours just to change all the dolls, and another 1 1/2 to change them all back, and its just so much easier dealing with 'contemporary characters', so I only did it the once...... There was a lot of humidity and rain, and both of us were feeling it in our arthritic joints. On Canada Day, at Cape Bonivista, I took a lot of photos while seated on the rocks. Here's one..... Next day my one knee seized up, and by evening I couldn't put any weight on it at all. My cough wasn't getting any better either, and I was starting to lose my voice, so I went to the Hospital in Twillingate, and was diagnosed with pneumonia. After starting on antibiotics, I was in a better mood, feeling rather hopeful again, so we did a photo session in town - at a picnic table - since there would be no more getting down on the ground for me.... But I didn't improve, so we decided to head for home - but from where we were, that meant another five whole days - two days to get to the ferry, then a whole day for the crossing, and at least two more days of hard driving. There were a few places I'd really still wanted to visit. One of them was Bottle Cove on the Bay of Islands. I'd changed everyone into nice summer weather clothes, but all I could manage was one hand-held shot of Leona and Coco...... Then they went back into their boxes, and no one made it out of the cupboard ever again.
But as badly as it all ended, I did take quite a few photos on the first half of the trip, and will start posting them soon. |
